Using Prim Composer

sculptie-pie-3dsmax-textured

  • Creating an Apple Pie Sculptie
    • This is a two part video. Part 1 shows how to create a wedge-shaped sculptie using Prim Composer for 3ds Max. Part 2 shows how to texture the sculpted prim so that it looks like a piece of apple pie. Composite maps are used to bake multiple materials into a single texture for use in Second Life and OpenSim.

  • Tip: Fixing Problems with the Bend Modifier
    • Someone noticed problems when using the bend and other procedural modifiers with sculpties. The original post is here.

It turns out that this is a side-effect of non-uniformly scaling the sculptie at the object level. This video tip shows how the problem arises and how to work around it.

Important: This is one of the reasons that you often read the advice: “do not scale meshes at the object level”. If you scale at the sub-object level (vertices and faces), then you avoid the problem completely.

  • Composite Sculpties in 1.2
    • The most significant improvement in 1.2 was the introduction of Composite Sculpties.
      • Create a composite object within 3ds Max that is comprised of several sculptie sub-object elements.
      • Export the composite object as a collection of sculpted prims that connect seamlessly and appear to be a single larger mesh.

This video that shows how you can create a 40m long “tunnel” that looks like it is a single mesh, but is actually composed of eight sculpted prims.

  • Working with Size Limits
    • Prim Composer 1.2 introduced the ability to turn off/on the prim size limits. This video describes how size limits work and how to turn them off if they are causing problems.

Turning off size limits can be useful when working at the sub-object level because size limits can cause the editor to randomly pop out of sub-object mode. See this forum thread for a more information of the sub-object editing problem.

  • Using the Symmetry Modifier
    • In 3ds Max, the Symmetry modifier allows you to mirror a mesh about an X, Y, or Z plane.

This video describes how to use symmetry with sculpties and the tricks that are needed to make it work.

I tried OpenSIM 0.6.6 Windows Installer (Post-fixes version r9993) in a xp pro sp3 32bits it worked just fine as standalone with default settings, now when I tried to migrate to mysql first I encountered the OpenSim.ini doesn’t mention at all the asset_plugin and so on, however following my instincts I thought it could be done through the standalone.ini, standalonecommon.ini and configuring cenomecache.ini but I never got the asset migration to mysql as you did in the video. Any idea? All seems to migrate to mysql except the assets, I go back all my steps and tried this http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Opensim.ini_example1 ini file and didn’t work either and that’s is not cool =’(

The procedure that I show in the video doesn’t migrate assets from sqlite to mysql.  It simply changes the storage mechanism to mysql.  The procedure is best when you are starting with a new installation.

I think if you want to migrate assets, then you will need to move the existing data from the sqlite database to the mysql database.  OpenSim won’t do that for you automatically.  There have been a couple of posts about this in the opensim-dev and/or opensim-users mailing lists.  See this post, for example.

ok I’ve got my opensim 0.6.6 Windows Installer (Post-fixes version r9993) running on mysql/guitools charmly, there was after I finished a little issue with the inventory but fixed it just adding the standalonecommon.ini configured and in my case I chose FlotsamCache.ini.

Freedom happy customer!

The table tut was very helpful. I wasn’t aware you should stay away from the standard poly editing tools so much. I’m not sure if it’s a problem with the download but the video only went about two thirds of the way through and then kept stopping. I managed to get the legs positioned but when I upload to opensim, the bottom of the legs are a tiny bit deformed. In fact, the fourth leg ends in a point and you have to set it into the floor.

Thanks for the advice
