Installation

  1. What are the system requirements?

SculptGenMax is a MAXScript written for 3ds Max 9. It might work for earlier/later versions of 3ds Max, but this has not been tested. It does not work for Max5.

  2. How do I install it?

    • Quit 3ds Max if it is running.
    • Copy the “primcomposer” directory that comes with SculptGenMax into 3DSMAX_HOME/stdplugs/stdscripts/ (where 3DSMAX_HOME is the directory in which 3ds Max is installed). If this is done correctly, then there will be a directory stdscripts/primcomposer/ that will contain several files such as sculptie-mapgen.ms and sculptie-import.ms
    • restart 3ds Max
Copy the primcomposer directory into stdscripts

    Copy primcomposer directory to stdscripts

From the 3ds Max main menu, select:

    MAXScript>Run Script...

    — in the dialog, select the script (SculptGenMax.ms) and press Open.

Then, from the main menu, select:

    Customize>Customize User Interface...

    — click on the Toolbars tab. Select Category “SecondLife”. Drag SculptGenMax to one of the toolbars.

    That’s it! You’re done!

  3. How do I uninstall it?

    1. Right click on the SculptGenMax button in the toolbar and select “Delete Button”.
    2. Find the file “SecondLife-SculptGenMax.mcr” and delete it.
    3. Remove the “primcomposer” directory from stdscripts.
    4. Restart 3ds Max
  4. How do I generate a sculptmap to export an object out of 3ds Max?

    1. Install script
    2. Create a 3ds Max object, modify it as desired, and select it. (refer to the SculptGenMax FAQ for instructions on creating the object.)
    3. Press the SculptGenMax button in the toolbar where you installed it.
      1. A dialog will pop up. Select desired bitmap resolution. Then on the dialog’s menu bar,
      2. File>Generate sculptmap from selected
      3. this will generate the texture in the dialog.
      4. File>Save current sculptmap to file… — to save the texture to a file.
      5. Now, you can load your saved sculptmap into Second Life and apply it to a sculptie prim.
  5. How do I import a sculptmap into 3ds Max?

    1. From the SculptGenMax dialog, select “File>Load sculptmap from file…”
    2. In the file browser, select the sculptmap you want to load. You can change the type of files being listed: jpg, bmp, tga, etc.
    3. Click “Open” in the file browser to load the sculptmap into SculptGenMax. Depending on the resolution of the sculptmap and the selected resolution in the dialog, it might not display fully in the SculptGenMax dialog. This is okay.
    4. From the SculptGenMax dialog, select “Edit Scene>Paste sculptmap into scene (topology)”. Choose the topology (sphere, torus, plane, or cylinder) that you want.
    5. Now, left click in one of the 3ds Max viewports to create an object from the sculptmap.
    6. Once the object has been created, you can manipulate it as any other object in 3ds Max. And after you’ve changed it, you can also generate a new sculptmap from it to export the object with your changes.
  6. Where can I find pre-made sculptmaps to import?

A few basic sculptmaps are included with SculptGenMax such as a sphere, a torus, a plane, and a cylinder. Look for the sculptmaps folder in the zip file.

I’ll be adding some more later. Obvious sculptmaps that are missing are things like a cube. If you have some that you’d like to donate, or if you know of a free distribution of sculptmaps (preferably on the web as opposed to in-world), let me know through the Downloads Contact Page.
